Drug Education and Prevention

Course Description:

This course will provide an overview of the major drugs of abuse and their effects on the body as well as the biological, sociological, psychological, and legal issues associated with drug use and abuse in our culture. An emphasis will be given to effective educational approaches and prevention programs that address the problems of use and abuse.

  • Lisa Ray, Director - Project Coordinator for the Addictions Studies Program, Department of Health Sciences, University of Central Arkansas
Course Objectives:

At the completion of Drug Education and Prevention, the student will be able to:

  1. Define the major terms used in drug education and prevention including drug use, misuse, and abuse;
  2. Examine the problems and costs associated with drug use and abuse;
  3. Review and analyze the common drugs of use and abuse during the various life stages;
  4. Explore the effects of dependency and addiction;
  5. Describe the basic effects of the major drugs of abuse on the brain and body and note the major chemicals in the brain that are affected.;
  6. Name and explain the pharmacokinetic aspects for the major drugs of -abuse.
  7. Examine the principles of effective prevention programs and analyze successful prevention approaches in parents and families, schools and the community;
  8. Describe how to teach health education standards in drug education and locate online resources for drug education;
  9. Identify principles of effective treatment for drug abuse and describe effective approaches and programs.
Grading of Drug Education and Prevention course:
For the course, three evaluation measures will be used to assign grades: the quality of the homework assignments; answers to the multiple choice and short answer questions; and the final exam.

A. Homework Assignments - Students are required to submit their responses to the assignments to their assigned course faculty member as soon as they are completed and before the final exam is taken. The assignments are worth 100 points.

B. Multiple Choice and Essay Questions - Students will submit the answers to the multiple choice questions on the answer sheet that is provided. Essay questions will be typed and sent to the instructor as well. The multiple choice answer sheet and the typed answers to the essay questions will be sent to the course instructor for grading after completion of each module. The instructor will provide feedback and comments as necessary. These questions are worth 100 points.

C. Final Exam - The final exam will require students to synthesize information gathered throughout the course and from the questions and the assignments. The exam will be essay format and will be worth 100 points.

D. Grading Distribution -

A = 273 - 300 points
B = 252 - 272 points
C = 222 - 251 points
F = Less than 222

Students who enroll in this course will be provided a one year subscription to an on-line health education curriculum at www.healthteacher.com. This is being provided as part of your tuition cost so you do not need to take any action until you receive an email from HealthTeacher.com. The email will provide you with directions on how to log on and a power point presentation describing the website and how to access the material. HealthTeacher.com will be a source for some of the student assignments in this course so do not hesitate to notify the HEPNetwork administrator or your assigned faculty member if you have not received your access within two weeks of paying your fees/or the beginning of the semester in which you have enrolled.

Course Overview:
Drug Education and Prevention is divided into three modules. Each module provides course lectures of varying lengths presented by several different course faculty and are divided into segments. Assignments with grading rubrics will be provided in a summary list at the end of each module. Multiple choice and essay questions will also be provided at the end of each module to help the student review and study the course content.
