Overview
Faculty that support the
HEP Network are distinguished health educators from across the U.S. Faculty
have demonstrated expertise in both health content areas and the various
processes used to effectively design, implement, and evaluate health education
and health promotion programs. We believe you will find the faculty have the
knowledge and practical application experience required to provide
high-quality instructional materials in a distance education format.

J. Don Chaney is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Laboratory of Distance Education Research at East Carolina University. Dr. Chaney is the
Associate Editor of the
American Journal of Health Studies and the creator of the
Health Education Advocate (an interactive website designed to promote
positive health legislation sponsored by the Coalition of National Health
Education Organizations). He received his Ph.D. in Health Education and
Health Promotion offered jointly by The University of Alabama and the
University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Beth H. Chaney is an Assistant Professor at East Carolina University. Dr. Chaney's research interests include assessment of quality indicators of distance education, community health education, and technological applications in health. She received her M.A. in Health Science from The University of Alabama, and a Ph.D. in Health Education from Texas A&M
University.

Steve Dorman is a Professor of Health Education and Dean of College of Health and Human Performance at The University of Florida. Dr. Dorman is the lead instructor for the Applied Epidemiology course and is involved in school health education activities. Dr. Dorman holds a MPH and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Tennessee.

James M. Eddy is Professor and Chair of the Division of Health and Safety at
Texas A&M University. Dr. Eddy developed the very successful distance
education maters program in health education at The University of Alabama and
has developed a wide variety of instructional technological applications for
the Alabama Power Company. He holds a doctoral degree from Penn State
University and was a former high school health educator in New York State.

Jane E. Elphingstone is a Professor of Health Sciences at the University of Central Arkansas where she serves as the graduate coordinator for the Master of Science degree in Health Sciences and teaches health education courses in both the graduate and undergraduate programs in community health education and prevention. Her area of expertise is in drug education and prevention. She received her Ed.D. from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and is a certified health education specialist (CHES). Her current professional efforts focus on development of an on-line master's degree in health education in coordination with the HEP network.

Eugene Fitzhugh is an Associate Professor in the Center of Physical Activity and Health at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Fitzhugh has an interest in epidemiology, GIS mapping, design and data management issues related to physical activity and health education. He holds a doctoral degree in health education and health promotion from The University of Alabama system.

B. Lee Green is an Associate Professor of Health Education and Executive Director of the Office of Institutional Diversity at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL. His primary research interest areas are in the study of health disparities and health care services in underserved populations. Dr. Green holds a Ph.D. in Health Education and Health Promotion from the University of Alabama system.

Bonni Hodges is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Education at the State University of New York at Cortland. She was instrumental in the development of the “Health Education in the Secondary School” course offered by the HEP Network. She holds a doctoral degree in Health Education from the University of Maryland.

Dr. Light is a Professor of Pharmacology and currently holds the endowed
OADAP Professorship on Alcohol and Drug Abuse within the College of Pharmacy at
the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He is a native of Indiana where he
completed the MS and PhD studies in Pharmacology at the Indiana University Medical
Sciences Program in Bloomington, IN. He then completed a two-year post-doctoral
fellowship in the Department of Physiology at Texas Tech University School of Medicine
in Lubbock, TX and joined the faculty of the College of Pharmacy at the University of
Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in 1979.
Since then he has developed an active, funded research program exploring the
mechanisms of damage to the brain induced by exposure to alcohol or other drugs of
abuse during fetal development. He has also been an innovative developer of
educational programs on alcohol and other drug abuse issues targeting a wide variety
of audiences including counselors, parents, teachers, law enforcement officers, and
workers in many types of industries. He initiated and produced 20 minute fullyanimated
cartoon as part of a prevention program that focuses on children in the
kindergarten through fourth grades.
He has worked for many years as the coordinating secretary of the Arkansas
Pharmacy Support Group, an arm of the State Board of Pharmacy charged with the
monitoring and advocacy support of pharmacists, technicians, and interns in recovery.
In February, 2006, as a result of his activities in addiction education of pharmacy
students and his service with recovering pharmacy professionals he was awarded an
Honary Certificate of Licensure by the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy, the first ever
award given by this Board.

Since 1970 Dr. O'Rourke has held an academic appointment at the University of Illinois, where he is a Professor Emeritus in the Department
of Community Health with a joint appointment in the College of Medicine. He also has served as visiting professor at several universities
in the United States and abroad. Dr. O'Rourke received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois, and a Master's in Public
Health (MPH) from the University of Michigan.
His interests are twofold. One is health policy analysis in the area of health promotion/disease prevention, and the other is evaluation of the planning and implementation of health promotion/disease prevention programs and health services.
Dr. O'Rourke has been actively involved in service activities in his state and community for many years. He has served as the national president of the American Association for Health Education (AAHE) and the American School Health Association (ASHA). At the national level he has been involved with CDC and NIH. He was a member of the State of Illinois HMO Advisory Board. At the local level he was appointed by the Champaign City Council and served for nine years on the board of Burnham Hospital. He also has served as a consultant to Champaign Project 18, which is a community-wide initiative to improve the health and well being of youth from birth to eighteen. Currently he serves as member of the Champaign County Board of Health. |

Dr. Mike Perko is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Health Education Program in the Department of Health and Applied Human Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Dr. Perko assisted in the development of the distance education masters program in health education at The University of Alabama and has served as a faculty member in that program for 5 years. Dr. Perko recently served on the Board of Directors for the American Association for Health Education and also chaired that organization's Professional Development Committee. He holds a doctoral degree from the University of Alabama; prior to that he was a practicing Health Educator in Newark, New Jersey.

Becky Smith is the Executive Director of the American Association for Health Education. Dr. Smith is a recognized leader in advancing the health education profession through inter-organizational collaboration. She holds a Ph.D degree in Health Education form the University of Illinois.

Min Qi Wang is a Professor of Public and Community Health at the University of Maryland. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Maryland, Dr. Wang worked at the University of Alabama and Pennsylvania State University as a faculty. Dr. Wang is one of the nations foremost experts on data management and computer applications related to health promotion. Dr. Wang is the Webmaster for the HEP Network and has supervised numerous similar activities for state and national agencies including Department of Health and Human Services and CDC. Dr. Wang received his Ph.D. from Arizona State University.

Dr. Donna M. Videto, CHES is an Associate Professor of Health at SUNY College at Cortland, in Cortland, New York. Dr. Videto teaches pedagogy classes to health education students, both graduate and undergraduate, and elementary education undergraduates. Her research interests include professional issues in health education and creating health education experiences for elementary and middle school students. Dr. Videto received her Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University and her M.S. and B.S. from Southern Connecticut State University. Prior to working in higher education and professional preparation, Dr. Videto taught health education in a K-12 setting.

G. Greg Wojtowicz is an Adjunct Professor in the Health Science Department at The University of Alabama. Dr. Wojtowicz assisted in the development of the distance education maters program in health education at The University of Alabama and has developed a variety of community-based health behavior interventions. He holds a doctoral degree from Penn State University and was a former school health educator and coach in New York State.
